Best Contemporary Mexican Photographers – a list

I’m interested in photography created in Mexico since 1960.  Not the early early stuff by Edward Weston or Alvarez Bravo but more recent work by the likes of Graciela Iturbide, Lourdes Grobet, Yolanda Andrade, and Mariana Yampolsky.   Can anyone please suggest a favorite contemporary Mexican photographer to add to this resource list?

  1. There’s a nice portfolio of Mariana Yampolsky’s work at: http://www.zonezero.com/EXPOSICIONES/fotografos/yampolsky/pg11.html.

  2. Many Mexican women photographers are represented at the UCR/California Women Photographers website at: http://www.cmp.ucr.edu/collections/permanent/object_genres/photographers/women/contents.html

  3. From his website, “Pedro Meyer is one of the pioneers and most recognized representatives of contemporary photography. He was the founder and president of the Consejo Mexicano de Fotografía (Mexican Council of Photography) and organizer of the first three Latin American Photography Colloquiums. Besides his artistic photographic work, Pedro Meyer has been a teacher in various prestigious institutions, as well as the curator, editor, founder and director of the renowned photography website ZoneZero, which hosts the work of over a thousand photographers from all over the world..” His website is at http://www.pedromeyer.com/

  4. Other photgraphers to see, from a book called “Between Worlds: Contemporary Mexican Photography” — Trisha Ziff, Pablo Ortiz Monasterio, Flor Garduno, Eniac Martinez, Adrian Bodek, Marco Antonio Cruz, Alicia Ahumada, Jose Hernandez Claire, and Ruben Ortiz. I will post links to them soon…

  5. I just received Flor Garduno’s book called “Witnesses of Time,” with an introduction by Carlos Fuentes. Wow, this is clearly the most lyrical portfolio of B/W photography of indigenous Latin America I have seen. Published by Aperture, this one is a must-have for art photographers shooting south of the border. For collector’s too, it speaks volumes about the future value of her original work.

  6. You can flick the Francisco Mata Rosas’ web site
