|~project desktop~| “Eternal Esperanza” Photo Exhibit

Posted in Photo Philanthropy, Photography, Project Desktops on June 6, 2007 by chrisengholm

This is a digital desktop for the creation of a photography exhibit. A team of folks is working to mount an exhibition of prints in Southern California for the benefit of firefighters who fought the horrendous Esperanza wildfire last year in which five firefighters lost their lives. The show is scheduled for mid-summer, 2007 at locations in the Riverside County where the fire occured. For those interested, the 25 images, show design, and promotional materials will be developed on this public desktop. Please stop by again to check our progress and make suggestions.

Here is a little more descriptive material: The Esperanza Fire that raged near Banning, California in late 2006 claimed five firemen and destroyed 34 homes. Chris Engholm has been making panoramic photographs of the 40,000-acre burn area on a weekly basis, recording the wounded landscape and its slow but inevitable healing. These are spectacular large-format panoramas that form a room-size rotation of images that lead the viewer from season to season in the aftermath of California’s worst wildfire. Canvas prints will be auctioned at the end of the event to benefit the local Firefighters’ Association.columnshouse.jpgThe flow of the exhibit is a “round,” with viewers circling through the seasons. We need to place the fire damage scenes in the first quarter, the snow and rain scenes about mid-way, and the landscape rejuvenation images at the end.sunset1.jpgThe sunset above is an old scan, Richard. The new one in post should be tweaked to emphasize the brilliant sky color however to a lesser degree. Thanks.twocars.jpg
Richard: When you send me jpegs for the web, let’s size them down to the sizes you see here. You can check the source on the website to get the exact measurements. The jpegs you sent look great but we might as well size on your end.

Chris,
O.K. I have put what I have into the sunset photo as you requested (see attached). I am showing it in two ways though. One with it in the original size of the photo and one with it the way you have suggested by extending the bottom. For display purposes I feel it is better in the one that is NOT extended.

My design is going in a direction which I feel your photowork has as a common thread. That is in a strong spiritual direction. I have also allowed the idea of HOPE itself to drive the design. What you see here may seem a bit strong but I feel that STRONG is what is needed in this particular situation.

This is a ROUGH design and only shows one of many type faces that I have selected to use (I have attached a look at the other type faces too). Richard

Hold this logo for possible use later on printed materials.  What we need at this point is a title shot for the show and the ‘logo’ should really only be letters along the base of this print.I have some people looking at the blog and the first thing I need to change is the title.  The word ‘eternal’ is redundant with the addition of the new subtitle.  New title should probably be:E S P E R A N Z A
 circle of healing
I would set it up as nice fonts first and then try different colors.  Yellow and gray?  Or maybe earthy colors — the show is about the land healing…Our purpose here is to create a sign at the entryway, not a brand insignia for the show or me. Later, for mailings of prints and portfolios, we’ll use the logo like you created. Here’s what I would suggest: imagine the movie poster for a drama of the same name.  What would the title font look like?Chris

Chris:

Here is what I think you are looking for in terms of positioning but I think we should do a final selection of a type face form the 15 I have supplied to you before I do a comprehensive version of what you need. I do not think it is a good idea to make the “e” lower case in the word eternal. I feel it is an important part of the title and cap letters tell people that words with a cap letter at the beginning of the word or all caps are important words. Lower case means it is just there… I have tried to address what I think you mean by doing it in all lower case by making the word Eternal much smaller and once you help me select a final type face we can monkey with this issue but for now just look at the attached version and let me know if it is going the direction you would like it to go.

Here are the first batch of raw scans done by ProPhoto in Irvine using the large Noritzsu machine. They are 80megs each (these are reduced) and cost $40 apiece. Richard, we need to critically compare these to the stitched scan from the Nikon Coolscan 800 and see if there is any discernible difference at a size of 18″ by fall.
